Save birds during kite flying, appeals Gujarat Govt

As Gujarat prepares for its kite flying festival on the occasion of Makar Sankranti (Uttarayan) on January 14, a great concern is being expressed over injury caused to a large number of birds and also to people due to kite threads.

While appealing people to avoid kite flying between 6 and 8 am and between 5 and 7 p.m when there is maximum activity of birds, the government asked them to avoid use of pucca thread made of plastic or such synthetic material or other toxic materials like iron dust and glass dust, which are likely to cause injury to birds as well as to humans. According to Forest and Environment department Principal Secretary Dr S K Nanda, the state government has taken various measures jointly with voluntary organisations and NGOs for the collection and treatment of injured birds. Various helplines have also been set up for this purpose, Dr Nanda added.
